The Societal Importance of Basic Dental Care

24 September 2014

Basic dental care is important for fending off the threat of dental diseases, including cavities, which are easily preventable with good dental habits. While some people view oral health as less important than general medical care, taking care of your oral health is just as important! There is a societal importance of basic dental care as oral health problems such as gingivitis have been linked to serious health problems like cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

It is no surprise that there are billions of people around the world who have no access to dental care. This includes the vast majority of the rural population and much of the poor living in the urban areas of underdeveloped nations. This is largely due to the lack of education and prevention programs established in these areas.

In Canada we are privileged to have dental care, and therefore shouldn’t take it for granted. We know that dental cleanings and fillings can be pricey if you’re not insured, but delaying necessary appointments can end up costing you much more in the long run!
