Nothing exudes confidence more than a bright beautiful smile. Next to your handshake in a job interview, it is the next all-important “first impression” you will make. That is why over the years cosmetic dentistry and especially dental veneers have become so popular.

Maybe you’re not particularly happy with the smile you see in the mirror. You might consider enhancing your smile with dental veneers. We will offer some facts about today’s cosmetic dentistry and explain the awesome history (and future) of dental veneers and why it might be right for you.

Cosmetic Dentistry – How Did We Get Here?

It wasn’t until the late 20th century that the term “cosmetic dentistry” became well known. Techniques like bleaching, veneers, and implants are now part of accepted and standard practice in most dental offices. They are used to make smiles more uniform and esthetically pleasing. How we got to this point is an interesting tale.

Ancient peoples found ways not only to clean their teeth, but they came up with rudimentary forms of dentures. They used bone and ivory to make dentures, even seashells and human or animal teeth. All these fixes were not very sanitary plus they were extremely uncomfortable.

During the 1800s porcelain dentures first appeared in the US. In the 1900s porcelain dental crowns became the standard, but once it was discovered porcelain could be fused with metal in the 1950s, dental crowns became more popular.

It wasn’t until the 1920s that the first veneers were created!

The Awesome History of Dental Veneers Started in Hollywood

During the 1930s and 1940s veneers became the “fix” for those movie stars who had either not taken care of their own teeth or simply had a less than gorgeous smile. Dr. Charles Pincus was the first to develop veneers using acrylic. Unfortunately they did not last very long and could only be used for short appearances at a movie opening or during the filming. Although they were temporary, they served the purpose of fooling the public into believing their movie stars all had perfect teeth.

In the 1980s researchers determined that hydrofluoric acid could be used as a permanent adhesive. Consequently, that changed the course of cosmetic dentistry.

Now veneers were something everyone could attain. They become more affordable and as time has passed, they became more natural looking. Veneers can improve the appearance of almost anyone who is not satisfied with their smile.

Think of anyone in Hollywood or in the media right now with a “perfect” smile, and they most likely have veneers. Many of our most famous stars have transformed their appearance with modern veneers. Nicholas Cage, Katy Perry, Katie Holmes, and Jennifer Garner are but a few.

Today’s Dental Veneers for the Masses

Veneers are no longer only for the rich and famous. The dental veneers of today are an ultra-thin sheet of porcelain bonded to your front teeth. This semi-transparent laminate hides and enhances anyone’s smile.

They are especially natural looking because porcelain reflects the light similar to the enamel of real teeth. Oakville Place Dental Office can match the color of the porcelain to your natural teeth in a simple process. Veneers will not stain and they can last anywhere from 10-30 years.

Veneers can hide and improve the look of:

  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Worn down teeth
  • Crooked or misaligned teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Extra spaces between teeth
  • Discolored teeth

Dark spots can be masked, imperfectly shaped teeth become flawless, and all this can be done quickly and painlessly.
